On Rewatching TOS Eps for the First Time in Years
There was a time (early high school, I'd say), when I could tell you the plot and run down a list of best lines from any TOS episode just from the title. I can't quite do that anymore, (though I've found that I still recognize them right quick after only a minute or two of the opening of the episode) and I'm enjoying rewatching the episodes for the first time in something like seven years. I just ordered the whole series on DVD and am watching in order. I'm about six eps into season one.
In watching "Where No Man Has Gone Before," I realized that the planet that Spock wants to strand Gary Mitchell on has the same name (Delta Vega) as the planet nu!Spock wants to strand nu!Kirk on in XI. It's clearly not the same planet (wildly different terrain and, I'm reasonably sure, in totally the wrong part of the galaxy). With all the planet names in all the universe, surely that's not a coincidence. I wonder how many other such tidbits I will find as I keep going.
It also nudges at a notion I've been pondering since I saw the movie: what happened to Gary Mitchell in reboot!universe? Or maybe, what will happen to him? (He's younger than Kirk in TOS, so since nu!Kirk has sort of leaped forward in his career, I suppose it's reasonable that a nu!Gary isn't even of academy age yet in the nu!timeline.) But I've been kind of focused on the negative things about the nu!timeline (for one, lots of dead cadets), but then it occurred to me that some people might end up living out full lives who snuffed it early in TOS.
